  1. Is it possible to encode MPEG-1 VCD to higher bit rate and still listen to the movie on regular DVD player ?

I want to fit my movies on two CD-R 80 min or 90 min without loosing on CD-R, using all the space by increasing the bit rate resulting beter quality picture.

    TIA

This will depend on your DVD player and the encoding software you use.
Some players will only play standard VCD (1150 kbps) and nothing higher.
I find my player (Logix 3000) plays VCD up to 2500 kbps when I capture straight to MPG1 then multiplex with TMPGEnc.
Of course, the higher the bitrate you use, the larger your MPG files will be so you will need to use a bitrate calculator to check the max bitrate that you can use to fit your movie on two CDs (see tools section).

  3. What you want is to be able to play XVCD on your player. See if your player is listed in the Compatibility lists, and there you can check what formats it plays.
