    Hi,

Is there any reason why an MKV file from MakeMKV wouldn't have an AVC profile attached to it?

I am trying to play the MKV file through a Sony BDP-S370 via a USB key, which won't play. I have used two programs to determine and change the AVC profile, but can't.

    ERROR: Can't find AVC profile

If this is in relation to the other thread on bd ripping with makemkv it should be apparent. It may not be avc. This is a straight copy of what is on the bluray disc. It could be mpeg2 or vc1. Those aren't avc.

You can use gspot or mediainfo to identify the codec of the video.

Just used MediaInfo which defines the video format as

    Format: MPEG Video
    Version: Version 2
    Profile: Main@Main
    Settings, BVOP: No
    ID: V_MPEG2

Any ideas why this wouldn't work, or how I can make it work?

It says its mpeg video. That means it not avc video and won't have an avc profile.

OR as I mentioned in your other thread transcode it through streaming with your pc with playon, ps3mediaserver, or tversity (no need to convert anything after its on your harddrive from the rip).

    Hi Yoda,

As I have mentioned before I want to get away from the "PC" element of media streaming. I want to choose a file format that will work on both a media streamer such as AC Ryan PlayON!HD2 (which supports MKV) and my Blu Ray player which apparently supports MKV, although apparently not this type!

Is there a way to use MakeMKV to create an MKV using AVC?

In that case I would hestitate to say you may have to reencode it then. You would use ripbot264 for example to encode the ripped disc to mkv with a bluray profile.

Is this a stand alone unit that doesn't use a computer?

Your rip would have to be converted to a format it supports. You have to read what its specifications allow and don't allow. I don't know if it will allow a pure bluray rip without any tweaking.

You may have to accept that some blurays would have to be converted. Bluray is different than dvd. Dvds have been around long enough where most if not all media players can easily play a ripped iso without any compression. Bluray isn't there yet. THere are three video formats it can contain and the hd audio might cause issues (unless you use fiber optic and play the core audio through an amp).

This isn't a fully matured area for hd video yet. Its getting close but you still have to do the leg work to find a path that works for you and your particular hardware.

    OK, simple question.

Is there a program that will convert an MPEG MKV to a AVC MKV? It has to remain lossless (1:1).

Is txMuxeR the way to go with this one?

Any conversion beyond simple muxing is not a lossless process. Going from mpeg to avc is a conversion. You can get very good results but I don't know if you can technically call it lossless.

You can remux but I don't know if it will give it the proper headers. You will have to test it to find out.
