    Hi,

What are the best free options to rip a BD to MKV whilst maintaining full quality (1:1)?

I imagine the ripping of a BD would use something like DVDFab HD?

What programs are there to convert the output to Lossless MKV?

hech kindly posted the crap ones, but what are the good ones (Free)?????

    Pavtube - CRAP
    Odin - CRAP
    Best - CRAP
    Leawo - CRAP
    Moyea - CRAP
    Lekusoft - CRAP
    iovsoft - CRAP
    aimersoft - CRAP
    aunsoft - CRAP

I have seen that one kicking around. So that is the best lossless DVD/BD to MKV solution?

Ill have a gander. $70 for Beta Trialware seems a lot, so I am a little skeptical about it.

    You are backing it though?

The beta is basicly free. It expires but a new free beta usually comes regular. But it might not support all latest blu-rays encryption. I use anydvdhd for that.

    Thanks.

AnyDVD HD doesn't rip to MKV (1:1) directly does it? You still need MakeMKV for that don't you?

    Cheers for the help.

No it doesn't. It runs in the background to allow other programs access to the disc unprotected.

But its usually the best practice to rip first to the harddrive. You can rip with anydvdhd it just doesn't do anything with the files.

OK so the process for ripping DVD/BD to MKV is:-

Rip DVD/BD Folder Structure to HDD using DVDHabHD or AnyDVDHD
Convert DVD/BD Folder Structure to MKV using MakeMKV.

This process is completely lossless, yes?

    One more question.

Is it possible to select mulitple objects to convert to multiple MKV's in MakeMKV?

For exmaple if you had a Series DVD which had multiple episodes on one disc which you didn't want as 1 single MKV, but an MKV per episode?

    Does that make sense?

MakeMKV converts each title to a separate MKV file. So, for a TV series you would usually have on the MKV screen a sequence of titles. You can select all the titles or some of titles.

If you use MakeMKV it would be my suggestion that you use that program first before you do any coping to your hard disk. If MakeMKV is going to decrypt the BR, and it usually does, it lets you know right away. For the occasional problem disk you can have Fab Passport or AnyDVD running in the background.

Sweet, so providing MakeMKV can read the DVD/BD I won't need to bother with DVDFab HD or AnyDVDHD beforehand?

Does anyone know what profile MakeMKV utilises? 5.1, 4.1? Any way in which I can find out?

    Thanks

MakeMKV doesn't reconvert at all(=full quality) so it will be same as the blu-ray source. Usually AVC/H264 HP 4.1/4.0 but it could also be mpeg2 or VC-1 video.

If you want to shrink/reconvert you must use something else.

    Thanks Baldrik.

I am not worried about file size, so shrinking isn't really an issue for me.

My main worry is compatibility with a Sony BDP-S370 (Via DLNA). Apparently MKV files are compatible via the USB port on this device, but not sure whether they are supported via DLNA.

Does it matter whether the Blu Ray player supports MKV via DLNA if I am using a media streamer such as AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 to stream to the Blu Ray player?

Not if the streamer does the transcoding. If it merely pushes the file along it has to be natively supported by the player. A pc streaming program like playon (the software not hardware), ps3mediaserver, and tversity do the transcoding.

Have you tried any of these three programs yet?

Have you tried mkvtoolnix. You have to demux the original blu ray first, but it works fine. And it's free.

this is easy, but you need anydvd.... 1. Use Clown_BD (free) to read your bluray data and choose streams, etc. 2. Wait for Clown_BD to demux your files. 3. Use mkvtoolnix to mux your video, audio and subs (if need subs). You can also enter frame rate, aspect ratio, chapters, etc. into mkvtoonix (mkvmerge). 4. DONE!!!
