  1. If I have a Blu-ray disk and a Blu-ray player, do I need a special projector (to project on a screen) to get the full benefit of the higher Blu-ray resolution? If so, what kind of projector is recommended?

  4. Thanks for the info. Didn't realize HD projectors are so expensive (about $2000). Way more expensive than a basic computer.

My projector was about $1400 US. You also need a video screen for best display, ~$200 and up. And sometimes a projector mount, depending on your setup. If you aren't familiar with projectors, they also require a fairly dark room.

But it does look really nice with a large screen and HD video.

  6. Can you tell me what brand is your $1400 projector and where did you buy it?

My projector is a Sony Bravia VPL-AW15. I've had it about 2 1/2 years. Still using the original bulb with no visible brightness drop. Video projector bulbs are expensive. Something to take into account.

A link to a review of it: http://www.projectorcentral.com/sony_vpl-aw15.htm Not sure where I bought if from, but probably Projector Central or whoever had the best price at the time.

The newer projectors are probably more efficient and maybe a better picture, but I've been happy.

I looked it up and I paid about $1300US new. My older Sony Bravia (800 X 600) was $1400, So it was nice to pay less for a upgrade. I specifically wanted the Sony as it had vertical and horizontal keystone adjustments and that makes it easier to have a picture that is perfectly rectangular and fits my screen, even if the projector is mounted off center vertically and horizontally.

I think I'm using a Da-lite brand screen at present, Da-lite 58" x 104" Video spectra screen. Don't remember the cost, but ~$300. There are better screens, but they get expensive with the larger sizes. I leave my screen down most of the time, so an electric screen isn't really needed.

If you are thinking home theater, then lighting (Or lack of) is important. I use blackout curtains to control exterior light and I can use my setup in the daytime. The Indy 500 or the Super bowl look great. Most of the time it's just Blu-ray videos. I use the HDMI ports on the projector.

It's a big investment, so lots of comparison shopping is advised. But I've never regretted it for a minute when I can sit down in my living room and watch a HD BD on a large screen with great surround sound.
