    Hi
I bought and have been using tmpgenc xpress for quite a while as its always done what i need - covert from one format to another with ease, has basic editing abilities and can read lots of formats including dvds.

however it seems more and more that I'm using formats it cannot handle like mkv and youtube movies.

I'm just wondering if there is any other software around that has the same functionality but works with more modern formats as well as old ones?

    thanks

Format factory is a good jack of all trades with lots of input and output options. It can also be customized to a high degree in terms of ratio, bitrate and subtitles and things like that.

For regular dvd creation avstodvd is an excellent choice.

there isn't any 1 tool to do all conversions well. find the proper one to do the job at hand. there are lots of excellent freeware programs out there to cover most bases. xmediarecode, mediacoder, handbrake, bdrebuilder, multiavchd, avstodvd, and list just goes on....

I believe Virtualdub belongs on this list also. With the new input plugins like FLV input plugin (264/aac), MKV input plugin, Directshow input driver and the new external encoder feature which allows the creation of MKV, MP4, AVI or MPG with commandline encoders like ffmpeg.exe, x264.exe, neroaacenc.exe, Lame.exe, MP4box.exe and MKVmerge.
