I used MakeMKV to remux my DVDs to MKV. Now I want to change one back to DVD cause my disk is scratched. I've been looking for a way to burn it to DVD but haven't had much luck.

I would prefer to remux it to a Video_TS folder so I can compress it with DVDRemaster Pro and then burn it to a single layer disk.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Extract the video and audio with mkvtools / mkvextract. Reauthor the video and audio to a video_ts dvd with smalldvd.

in small dvd there is only an option to add video files and when I try to add the audio (ac3) it gives me an error saying "invalid input file format"

To Get an MKV into DVD, you can use ffmpegx, VisualHub, or MpegStreamclip,
    on a mac.
Once you have the MKV transcoded into m2v video and either aiff or ac3 audio,
then drag and drop those assets into Toast Titanium's Video Tab Window,
and author to DVD by clicking the "burn" button.

Just use Toast instead of smalldvd then. Add the m2v/mpeg video and ac3 audio from the mkv. You don't have to use anything to convert/transcode the video.

  8. VisualHub allows you to do the whole process, it will convert and also author as dvd so you will only need Toast to burn the disc...

I used Toast like Baldrick said, but the audio is behind about 10 min. I don't see an option to change it either. I'll have to try VisualHub when I get home. I'll let you know if it works.

    Well I finally got home

I'm trying to install the libraries need for VisualHub but the download keeps failing and I can't seem to find them to do it manually.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks.

    Edit:

I found them. I'll update with my results.

Well, VisualHub just re-encodes the video. Are there some settings that I'm just missing?

Yes, you need to go into the Advanced tab, and select "Process with Quicktime".
Make sure you have Perian 1.2.1 or higher installed on your system.
VisualHub will then hand off the mkv to Quicktime, which will use
Perian to load the whole mkv, thus insuring everything is in sync.
Then, VisualHub will process it out. Depending on the length of the video
and your system, expect it to take up to 1.5 x the runtime of the video
to process ( so for a 2 hour video it will take about 3 to 4 hours to total to process).

  13. 3 to 4 hours seems very long even for a slow app, VH is not that slow but i find it does not handle the current mkv files that i try to convert.

If it's 3 to 4 hours then it's re-encoding the video, which is pointless since it's already in MPEG-2 format.

I'm starting to regret the decision not to use .iso for all my rips.

Anyways, Thanks to all you guys (or gals) who have helped. I'd be lost without y'all

    Wait a minute?
So your raking mpeg-2 files and putting them in .mkv containers?!?!?

Why not just use something like VLC and not wrap the mkv's at all,
    playing the mpeg-2 assets?

As to not re-encoding, what you'll need to do then is use Baldrick's extraction method,
and then with the mpeg-2 assets, drag and drop those into the DVD tab of
Visualhub, and it should author to Video_TS much faster.

However, I can't guarantee that you won't experience the same "audio lag"
as you did with Toast...Obviously something is off when you wrapped
the assets in the mkv...by having VisualHub re-process it, you'd fix the "lag",
but with just using the assets, the "audio lag" might re-occur as before....
Your choice, I'd give it a try though. " shrugs"

    your welcome, anytime.

Well I was going to try this and found out that MKVextract is PPC and won't work since I updated to Lion. Is there a way I can do this through command line or another app if possible?

You can try the builds of mkvtoolnix here: http://jonthn.free.fr/MKVtoolnix/ They're reportedly Universal builds, though I haven't installed them to test (I have them, just haven't had a need to install them, yet).

Hmm. The .app in those mkvtoolnix builds is basically for mkvmerge, and doesn't allow direct use of mkvextract, I think (just took a quick look at it). The binary is in the app package, though, so you can always copy it and use it.

Why not use mkvtools? I believe it's a universal/Intel binary.

I tried MKVtools and it says "MKV tools could not identify the video track". I've tried multiple mkv's and it only works with those with h264 video.

Does anybody know of a good tutorial of how to do this with mkvtoolnix in the command line?

    Thanks

I don't know about a tutorial, but here's the documentation for mkvextract: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/doc/mkvextract.html

Edit: I took another look at an app I'd found, iMKVExtract. One problem I'd had was that the listing for it on MacUpdate claimed it was PPC-only, but the version I found on the above page claims to be Universal. (As the page is in French (and some texts in the app are, as well), click on the link at the end of the "Télécharger la dernière version de iMkvExtract ici." line underneath the iMKVExtract screenshot to download. ) Maybe that app will help.
