I have Vegas 9.0 Pro. On an avi file, there's a patch of audio that produces a 30 sec or so squeal. I'd like to eliminate it. When I try to select an audio editor, there is really nothing to select. I do not have a current version of Sound Forge. It's about 4 years old and not installed. Was I supposed to get a sound editor when I bought 9.0? Maybe there's another way to get the squeal out but preserve the audio of someone talking. I think the noise came from a nearby electronic source.

I just use Audacity. You could select to replace the 'squeal' with just silence or try to filter it. I don't know what Vegas ships with.

It's important to know what the speaker is saying. I do have Audacity, but how do I tell Vegas to use it?

They don't integrate directly. If you use audacity (or any audio editor), you would process the audio in audacity, then export wave audio for import into vegas

The trick is getting the audio portion into Audacity. Kind of awkward. I suppose I can cut it out of the audio track on the avi in Vegas, then render it as an avi.

Very simple "trick": Audacity can open the AVI file and extract audio by itself. (If you have installed the ffmpeg plugin.)

Then edit it, save it back to a compatible format (Eg, MP3 CBR 160 or higher rate) and replace the original audio with the new audio (presumably Vegas can do that; I don't use it).

Hmmm, I thought I responded to the above. I just decided to just the WAV suggestion using vdbub. Works fine.

The install did not create an item in the Start menu of Win 7. Anyone know how to do that?

If it's a .exe file, it may not add itself to the start menu, but you can pin it there manually, or pin a shortcut there.

You can set any audio editor in Preferences/Audio Tab. Then right click the audio and it should show up.
