Just to toy around, I used Windows Live Media. However, when I play the DVD on my computer or TV, the output is somewhat blocky (and this does not come from the source).

What software best encodes AVI to dvd and keep the picture quality just as the source?

This same Q/post was still on the front page when you posted this, Guessing you did not search at all
    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/332676-Need-a-AVI-to-DVD-software

I always liked ConvertXtoDVD, and there is DVDFlick and probably some others that escape my mind at the moment.
Depends on if you want to pay for it or get it for free, how much you want it to do, etc.

I never use windows anything to encode to anything because it always seemed to suck for anything you used it for.

AVStoDVD is another free program to try. It can import a variety of different file formats and codecs.

I'd love to get it for free Noah, so long as it does what it has to do in high quality.

Well, what is the original AVI ?
AVI is basically just a container that holds the video format, for example, is it a Divx/Xvid ?

What is the resolution of the original video file you have before converting it to "dvd" format ?

What looks good in a 4" media player screen on your pc desktop/monitor is not going to look good on a 42" full screen tv.

Good question Noah. Well I'm not sure what type of AVI it is, but it's the AVI released by Virtualdub. That is, I loaded my VOB file into Virtualdub, did my editing and saved the AVI. Would you know what type of AVI Virtualdub converts files to?

MediaInfo should tell you which audio and video codecs were used, etc. View->Text is convenient if you need to copy and paste the results from MediaInfo in a post.
