Can somebody tell me the best settings for Xvid codec in Virtualdub 1.9.10 (for single pass) such as "Profile level","Zone options","other options","quality preset" etc. because i want to embeded subtitles (srt filter) in avi files.
I put the same bitrate but the result is less quality than the original. Much less actually

    Thanks in advanced.

  4. yes file size should be increased with q=1

if you re-encode using xvid (or any lossy format), you will always reduce quality . You reduce that quality loss by using higher bitrates (lower quantizers)

start from the original source DVD / blu-ray if you want better quality

  6. Then you have to make some trade offs - either suffer the quality loss with same filesize or increase the filesize with less quality reduction

Or use better compression than xvid (e.g. x264 encoder)

Or use softsubs and no quality loss

Soft subs means keeping the subs external to the video and having them play along. Most standalone MPEG-4 players support external subs in some formats so check your manual to see which formats are supported. Usually SRTs are supported, and sometimes others. If you can do it that way it'll save you from having to reencode the AVI. Just make sure the subs have the same name as the video (like Movie.srt and Movie.avi). Then burn them to disc together, the AVI and the subs.

Different players have different ways of 'turning on' the subs. You might try using the Subtitle button on the remote control. Again, check your manual.
