OK since my previous post I found it's extremely easy to add SRT subs to an AVI file. Issue being the movie (AVI) is in English, there's just a few parts in French that need subtitles (SRT). However I don't need a movie hard coded with running subtitles at the bottom, I just need the subs to pop up during the French speaking parts. Opening the SRT file in notepad I see the beginning looks like:
So say they were speaking French in the 3rd and 5th speaking parts. Would I delete everything but:Code:1 00:00:42,125 --> 00:00:43,833 Come on, get up. 2 00:00:44,958 --> 00:00:47,667 You need to buy gifts for your kids before we leave. 3 00:00:47,792 --> 00:00:49,792 I'll pick up something at the airport. 4 00:00:49,958 --> 00:00:50,958 No way. 5 00:00:51,708 --> 00:00:53,208 Airport gifts suck. 6 00:00:53,375 --> 00:00:56,000 Marie, please let me sleep another half hour. 7 00:00:57,500 --> 00:00:58,542 Fine.
Or would I have to rename the parts changing the 3 to a 1 and the 5 to a 2:Code:3 00:00:47,792 --> 00:00:49,792 I'll pick up something at the airport. 5 00:00:51,708 --> 00:00:53,208 Airport gifts suck.
OR God forbid would I have go through each entry and delete the text i.e.:Code:1 00:00:47,792 --> 00:00:49,792 I'll pick up something at the airport. 2 00:00:51,708 --> 00:00:53,208 Airport gifts suck.
That or is there some bit of software that would take care of this? Any help would be very welcome, thanks!Code:1 00:00:42,125 --> 00:00:43,833 2 00:00:44,958 --> 00:00:47,667 3 00:00:47,792 --> 00:00:49,792 I'll pick up something at the airport. 4 00:00:49,958 --> 00:00:50,958 5 00:00:51,708 --> 00:00:53,208 Airport gifts suck. 6 00:00:53,375 --> 00:00:56,000 7 00:00:57,500 --> 00:00:58,542

You could delete everything except the parts you wanted to keep for the french speaking parts and usually the numbering does not matter as long as the timings are correct.
Just make a backup of the file and try it. -
It's easier to delete subs in Subtitle Workshop than a text editor, as it's just move to the sub and press the delete key, rather than selecting the several line of text you see in a text editor.
Also, if you've already deleted a bunch of subs using a text editor, just opening and resaving it in Subtitle Workshop will renumber the remainder correctly. -
Either way it really does not matter because you will have to scroll through all the lines to delete what needs to be deleted.
And numbering does not make a difference either as long as the timings are correct. -
I've done it both ways, and it really is much easier in Subtitle Workshop.
It's also easy to screw up the file in a text editor unless you're very careful.
I always load it up in Subtitle Workshop to check "Information and Errors" after editing it anyway.
Maybe not necessary for all applications, but why not be correct.
