Not home at the present, but all the newer LG ones will play the formats listed. Even the 65.00 on at Wal-Mart will play them. (I bought two for my In-Laws for Christmas.)
btw, the 5.1 AAC will only play back as 2.0 PCM via optical or analog. To get 5.1, you need to pipe it out the HDMI and select 5.1 PCM and feed to an HDMI Receiver. For the love of God, use hub/core labels on your Recordable Discs! -
I have an LG BD550 (USA version) and I can't get it to see any video files on USB thumb drives or CD/DVD, only JPG and MP3 files.

thats the LG BD 530. I bought one too for $65 .

it's a basic BD player with front USB .I don't think it's worth more than $70 if you can get your hands on one
I didn't have any issues playing clips from my Panasonic HDC-TM55K Hi-Def Camcorder,Panasonic TA-1 Ultrathin HD Pocket Camcorder,or any of my Divx files from the USB -
Ok so i didn't want to start a new thread and just have a quick question. Ok so I was looking at my tv (JVC 48" widescreen and it says 1080i) and it has 1 HDMI input, I never really payed attention to it as I always just use the rca ones, the yellow, red and white. My question is, that if I were to buy an HDMI cable and hook up my 5990 to my tv would the avi files be upconverted? Or is that only for just like regular dvd's, you know the ones you buy at the store.

The Philips upconverts what it sends over HDMI. There are settings where you can explicitly set a resolution or "auto" which would choose the highest. If your TV has a 16x9 mode or is 16x9 then set it to Widescreen type in the settings. Stuff sent over the Component or Composite(where the video is the yellow cable) the TV may upconvert depending on the TV. My Sony does.
Short answer is yes the Philips will upconvert via HDMI cable if you set the HDMI settings and TV type properly. It's not difficult. Just a bit confusing.
Not only will it upconvert .avi, but .wmv or any video type it can play. The shortcoming is you can't play video files greater than SD resolutions. It just won't play 'em. So it's a bit absurd downsizing videos so you can upconvert them. That's why I got WD box. But I still use my Philips quite a bit.http://milesaheadsoftware.org/

The movies and tv show i download are usually 640x272 or 624x352 and some older tv shows and cartoons are 640x480 and they look really good just by hooking up the yellow, white and red ones. I will buy a hdmi cable and see if I can tell the drifference in the video quality.
Thanks for the info, -
The HDMI cable should give you a better picture. But remember your TV upconverts standard definitions video to put it on the screen. So part of the issue revolves around which has the better upconverting algorithms. The DVD player with HDMI has an advantage in that the signal remains digital all the way from the disc to the TV screen. When going through a composite cable, the digital data on the disc is converted to the lowest quality analog video type, sent to the TV, then the TV digitizes the signal again, upscales it, and finally displays it.

The input from my Philips DVD player is via component cables. My WD set top box I use the HDMI and HD from my cable TV is component cables. (The Sony only has one HDMI input and I don't feel like messing with switches.) I can't tell any difference. If the input looks good the picture looks good. Naturally high quality HD input looks better than upconvert but I can't see any quality difference depending on the cable input. My TV is 23" Sony Wega. If it was a big flat screen then maybe I could see more variation. But the quality on the Sony is great. Even SD avi upconverted, if the .avi has good or high quality, the upconverted picture on the Sony looks really good.
I read an article on the web that said if your HDTV has a good upconverter then you wouldn't be able to distinguish composite cables from HDMI. I tried it. I hooked up my Philips DVD player using the crappy skinny composite cables that came in the box and played a good looking 16x9 DVD9. It looked great. I couldn't tell the difference. Where it falls down is 4x3 input. The TV won't upconvert unless the input is 16x9. If it's 4x3 then it fills the whole picture tube instead of using 16x9 mode. In that case it looks like crap.http://milesaheadsoftware.org/
