  1. Hello all,
I have an .avi video that has the same background color in (or is it for?) all frames. I wish to edit the color, so I need either a free program which can change the color, or I need a free program which can split an .avi by frame, so that I can edit every frame's color, and then make a new .avi from them.

    Please help...

    Thanks in advance.

  2. At the least you probably need an NLE (Non Linear Editor) to open your .avi file and render out individual frames for you to change in a photo editor.
If the background color is fairly consistent you may be able use a "green screen" effect, a solid color that can be keyed out and replaced in the timeline of the NLE.
Free NLE's are pretty basic at best, you might be able to use a trial version of Premiere or Vegas to do what you want.
    Good Luck

Ok, I downloaded Quick AVI Splitter which can split up a video by frame, but I learned that's not a feasible option, seeing as the video has 600+ frames. It would take forever to modify each individual frame by hand.
So, I went ahead and download Vegas Pro 10.0 like you suggested, and took a look at the program, but could not find an option to insert a "green screen" effect, as you put it. Vegas Pro has many Video Event Fx options, but "green screen" was not one of them. I attached a screenshot of the effects that are available in the program. Maybe you'll be able to spot the one that I need.

    Thanks.

EDIT: And like already mentioned, the background color is the exact same for all frames, and I wish to change it for all of them.

  4. it's called "chroma keyer" in vegas , but if you key it out, it becomes transparent , so you have to put a layer underneath to "show through"

another method is "secondary color correction" . e.g. change someone's shirt color from red to blue . Search google and youtube - there are dozens of step by step video tutorials on how to do this

And how do you put a layer underneath?

    Thanks for the reply.

  6. you can use anything, just drag it to the track below

e.g. a png from photoshop . Or you can use vegas' media generator

Well, I tried that already, but the image obscured the video beneath it for the time that it was visible.
Should I import the image first, drag it to the timeline, and then import the video?

    Yeah, I think that's what I'll try.

EDIT: Ok, that appears to work, but I'm confused with the chroma keyer effect. When I select it, it opens a Video Event Fx dialog box with a Preset: drop down menu which has the options "Blue Screen", "Green Screen", "Pure Red Screen", "Pure Green Screen", "Pure Blue Screen", and then it has a color selection tool underneath it. It doesn't appear to be transparent, and when I click the "Animate" button, leaving everything at the default setting ("Blue Screen"), and click Play for the video, it now shows most of the video obscured and invisible, even though I have the image with the new color background underneath the video.

EDIT: Ok, nevermind. I figured it out. I modified the color of the Chroma Keyer to match the one I want to replace, and it works now.

    wrong relationship

video on top , color image on bottom

think of the alpha channel as a see through "hole" so the image below can be seen to "poke through"

You can re-arrange the order of the tracks after they are laid out, it doesn't matter
