Subtitle retime and remux doesn't preserve font and positioning

Good afternoon,

First of all, I apologize if this turns out to be a simple blunder on my part, and additionally if I've posted this in the wrong
section. I've read through the threads on the forums and have found people experiencing similar issues, but unfortunately, advice offered to them have not resolved my problem.


I'm having an issue when muxing subtitles from one file to another. What I'm trying to do is to extract the subtitles from one file that has superior subtitles but inferior video quality and mux them into a file that has inferior subtitles but superior video. I must retime the subtitles for the new file, but when I do this, the font and positioning of the subtitles is not preserved, essentially making them unusable.


However, if I simply mux the subtitles into the new video without retiming them, the subtitles' font and position are preserved
(but, of course, the timing is off). Even delaying the subtitles by one millisecond does this. As stated, if I do not edit the subtitle times at all, it works fine.



For reference -
-Video 1 has superior subtitles / inferior video
-Video 2 has inferior subtitles / superior video
-I'm using Media Player Classic - Home Cinema to play the files





This is precisely what I've done -


-Open Video 1 with MKVExtractGUI-2.2.2.2 and extract the subtitle file (.ass) and all font Attachments

-Open the extracted subtitle file with Subtitle Workshop (I have also tried Subtitle Edit with the same results) and make time adjustments to all
subtitles to fit the new video

-Open Video 2 with MKVmerge GUI v4.4.0 and add the retimed subtitle track and add all of the fonts extracted from Video 1 as Attachments (MIME, ttf)

-Remux and open the new file only to find that although the text is there, it is all in a single, unusual font and it is all
at the bottom of the screen. Where there should be subtitles in a different font on a different part of the video (such as a translated
book title on the book itself), it is displayed at the bottom of the video in the same font as everything else.


I've seen things mentioned such as embedding fonts in the subtitles and something about "splitting" with mkvmerge, but unfortunately I couldn't understand what to do. I'm not sure if they're related this problem - to my untrained eye, it seems to be the retiming only that seems to be causing the problem, but I have long accepted the fact that I may be laughably wrong! Perhaps there is something else I must change when retiming the subtitles to get them to keep the font and position? Again, the subtitles themselves -work- when retimed, they're just displayed improperly despite adding the fonts as attachments properly (as far as I know).


Both videos are in MKV containers and use .ass files for their subtitles. I've been tusseling with this issue for quite a while now with many different shows and finally decided to seek the advice of some more qualified folks! If this post isn't enough to describe my issue, I would be happy to post screenshots showing the problem. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post. Any advice at all is greatly appreciated.

Try an ssa/ass editor like aegisub.

Ha, I knew it would turn out to be something simple.
I had just tried that a few days after posting.
Didn't realize aegisub was a dedicated ssa editor unlike the others.
All seems to be well now, thank you very much Baldrick!
