  1. Hi guys, im having a problem with installing the following plugin for VLC http://www.shapeshifter.se/code/vlc-unrar/.
With this plugin you can play unfinished downloads. But this only works when all partial archives are complete. My problem however is that i cant turn the plugin on. maybe its becus im running 64-bit win 7..

However, there are more programs like this but they all come with a load of bugs (examples are NZBplayer and Dziobas Rar Player)

I really want to get this work properly.. if you guys know any other software or if you got this working yourself, please tell me.

    thank you

I don't understand why you need a plugin. VLC can play RAR archives without any plugin at all when you have downloaded all of them - and assuming that none are corrupted. By the way, your understanding of the plugin is NOT correct. It states on your link that you must have downloaded EVERYTHING to use it.

By the way, I tested today VLC's ability to play unextracted RAR archives and it works fine.

How do you open the set of rar files with VLC? Because when i open the video files inside in an uncomplete rar archive with vlc, it immediatly tries to extract all of it at once.

    What part of

"It’s currently not possible to view partial archives, all parts must be present" - listed under limitations - do you not understand ?

Jman98 has already stated that you need all the parts of the rar archive for this to work. It does NOT work with an uncomplete rar archive.

if you just want to sample the video before getting all of the parts, it is possible to open the first part, the .rar or .001 and check the option to extract and keep broken files.

  6. apperently i didnt make myself clear.

when you download from a newsserver you almost always get a set of .rar files.
now if you manage to download these rar files in the right order, you can already watch the movie when the first rar file is complete.
thats what i want. i dont want to wait for the download to be complete.

    Try Dziobas Rar Player
    http://ds6.ovh.org/drp.html

Haven't used it, but it's often recommended for this. (Meaning: no guarantee, but I think it's safe at least.)

ye i tried that one, it kinda pauses after every rar file to get the next rar file extracted. it also crashes alot. it says it is *experimental*, and i kinda think the guy who made this left it for what it is.

  9. I have never heard and wouldn't bother playing half of an incomplete rar. How can you play a rar? isn't it a compressable format not a media file or can it be? if there's an avi in the incomplete rar go rightclick, extract files, tick keep broken files and extract, you'll get a warning so ignore that then you'll have an incomplete avi to watch

Only works if you ahve the first part, also it's worked for me when you have part 1,2 and not 3 and 4 so you get half, So you need ascending order from part1 if it's an avi or mkv.
Other files the documents might work without part1.

Of course it has to extract parts on the run.
Can't see how it could be otherwise.

If the file is incomplete, you can't expect it to play normally.

This is mainly meant to preview a download so you can abort after a few segments if it isn't what you want.

Notwithstanding the fact that you, jimhoofd, are surely in error when you think that your time is so limited that you cannot wait until the downloads are competed to watch anything, let me ask you a question.

Is there a reason other than stupidity as to why you can't simply let your downloads run while you sleep and THEN attempt to watch what you got after you wake up and it has finished instead of trying (and failing) to do what you propose? You know that's a pretty mean spirited comment for me to make but one thing that drives me nuts is dealing with idiots who are too stupid to realize that they can leave their PCs running WHILE THEY SLEEP.

And again, you need to understand that if there are ANY errors at all in the RAR parts of the archive that playback WILL terminate as soon as the first error is encountered.

What you want is streaming media. There are plenty of sites that do that, legit and not.
Trying to play a file while it's being downloaded in compressed chunks is fraught with problems.

This forum, as its name implies, does offer and deliver help. In fact you have already been advised of the best approach yet simply because we are not dotting all your i's and crossing all your t's (telling you what you do not want to hear) then that help, in your eyes, does not exist.

The problem these days is that people are too impatient. They want everything not tomorrow but yesterday. A little patience and you get what you want. And the implication that the download is a freebie should be enough to wait that little longer.

In fact the absolute best advice would be to rent or buy the darn movie. But you would not want to hear that either.
