So I tried to burn a dl blu ray disc the other day with burn aware (bd data disc) by putting ~45gb worth of videos from my jvc camera. It was in its original .mod format that it came in when I backed up the files on the pc. Now when I tried playing the bd disc on my bd player it simply ejected it, and when I put it back in my pc it read as 0 bytes used/free. I tried making another disc, this time with power director where I converted it to avi and then burned it, which worked fine.
Is the first disc salvageable somehow? It's a Verbatim 97335 and it says it's single recording only.

No. It's a use once disc. You would need a re-writable to be able to use them again. I don't know if they make RW BD-DL discs, but they would be really expensive.
I would try using ImgBurn instead for just the burning part. It's the most reliable BD burning program I've used. I've burned quite a few Verbatim 25GB BD data discs and no problems at all. And unless your BD player can play HD data discs, that method won't work for set top players. I only use them for backup and PC playback.
What set top BD player do you have, brand and model? Same with your BD burner? That information may help. But my first guess is your burning program, then maybe your burner. Data is just data, whether it's video or numbers, so it should burn with no problem to a disc. Playback on other than a PC is a bit more complicated.
And welcome to our forums. -
My bd burner is hl-dt-st-re bh30n and my bd player is just some run of the mill samsung, so nothing special. I don't understand why the bd disc is only recognized as blank? Is it because of the type of format (mod) of the videos burned, some burning error, or what caused this?
I just used data disc because that's the only bd option burnaware had. When I used power director I just imported the video, converted it to avi and then burned it on the bd disc which played on my bd player. So data discs are not playable on bd players, and should only be used for pc playback? What other methods are there for getting it to player on a normal bd player? -
You could try multiAVCHD to get a BD set top compatible file. I don't have a set top BD player, so I haven't tried it. It could be the disc wasn't properly closed by the burning software, but that's just a guess. As mentioned, ImgBurn is more dependable just for the burning part.
Most set top BD players require the BD format for sucessful playback. See 'WHAT IS' Blu-ray to the upper left on this page. It's quite a bit different than the DVD format. -
Apparently they do, $25 bucks apiece

I've used about thirty of the Verbatim Blu-Ray BD-R 25GB 4X Branded, 10-Pack (96769) About $19US from Rima. Three 8GB MKVs per disc. That works out to about $0.64 per 8GB MKV, actually cheaper than my Verbatim DL discs for the amount of data. The BD discs burn on my Pioneer BDR-203 at up to ~8X, so I've switched over to them for backup storage.
Verbatim DVD+R 8.5GB, Dual Layer, Branded, 10-Pack (95166) $14US or $1.40 per 8GB MKV.
Verbatim Blu-ray BD-R DL 50GB 6X 10pk Spindle Box is $79.95 from Rima, or about $7.96 per disc. Figure six 8GB MKVs would be about $1.33 per 8GB MKV, so they are a bit cheaper than the DLs for the amount of data.
