Best format would be to get a bluray burner and simply back it up as it is. That way while bluray is still around in a physical format you can simply pop in the disc and it will work.

That said h264 is the actual codec and mkv and m2ts are merely containers. You would encode to h264 and wrap them in a mkv or m2ts file.

Since you are working with the ps3 you might try to use an encoder that does mp4. Ripbot would be a good choice. It has a mp4 output that might be suitable for the ps3. I haven't tried it in awhile so I can't say for sure.

I'm looking at the fixed bitrate on the DVDFab config, and what do you set as your settings for configuration regarding bitrate, 1-2 pass, size etc?

awesome information , thanks for the time

Honestly I've never used dvdfab. I've used anydvdhd to rip the bluray in its entirety and then mostly used ripbot afterwards.

I'm lucky in that I have a hauppauge hd pvr and can do realtime dubs so long as there is a dolby digital track. Unfortunately it doesn't encode dts so that leaves stereo only for realtime dubs on discs without dolby on them.

But like I said when I do digital backups I'll use ripbot - I've done mkv with a target lock set so it will fit a dual layer disc - 7000mb or soemthing like that - ie 7gb to make sure it fits.

so are you backing your 7G file up to a DVD 9, or backing up multi files to a BD-25 disc?

I don't have a bluray burner. I've burned them to dual layer dvdrs. Those in mkv won't play on a ps3 of course.

Be sure to use imgburn if your burning to dvdr. I've never burnt a bluray so I dont' know the best practice for those.

FYI if you already have a bunch of mkvs you can try two things:

use mkv2vob to wrap them in a vob the ps3 can read.

use multiavchd to make an avchd that the ps3 will read (also burnable to dvdr to either single layer or dual layer with an option to split across discs to preserve quality)

You will find the m2ts wrapper more Blu-Ray player friendly.
