  1. Hi,

Could someone let me know (or link to) the types of HD file formats a PS3 will play?

    I see the manual says:
    • MP4 file format
    • - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)

But I'm not sure if that means if I download something like this to my NAS box it will work over DLNA

    ViDEO BiTRATE...: x264 @ 11304 Kbps
    FRAME RATE......: 23.976 fps
    AUDiO 1.........: ENG DTS-CORE 5.1CH 1536 kbps
    ASPECT RATiO....: 2.400: 1
    RESOLUTiON......: 1920 X 800
    FilE SiZE.......: 9.5G
    x264 [info]: frame I:1339 Avg QP:18.04 size:204766
    x264 [info]: frame P:40889 Avg QP:18.69 size: 91565
    x264 [info]: frame B:110440 Avg QP:20.55 size: 45435

    Thanks

DTS might be the only issue. The PS3 only seems to like DTS audio if it is authored in a DVD. BD or AVCHD.

  3. It says 'unsupported date' is that related to the filename being a .mkv?

What would be the best way to get to play these on a PS3? Convert to something else?

If your DLNA can stream it then the container shouldn't matter. I think if you go back a re-read the message it actually says "Unsupported Data", which could mean any number of things. Start with a mediainfo text view of the file in question so we can see how it was encoded. I still think the DTS audio will be an issue.

I simple test would be to set up something like PS3 Media Server on your PC and stream from that. Try transcoding the audio to AC3 instead and see if you get the same message. If so, try trancoding the video as well. It will be hard work with 1080p material unless you have a high-end desktop and an ethernet connection, but it will tell you where the issue lies.

The PS3 doesn't like anything mkv. Use Tsmuxer to put it in a m2ts container and it will play.

Would one have an advantage over the other?

VOB will probably have lower overheads than an M2TS, so the files will be smaller.
