  1. Hey there, I was hoping that you experts out there would be able to offer some info. I've been researching for quite a little while about buying a external capture device, either analog or dv and analog. I've searched here, video guys, dazzle, pinnacle, and i'm still unsure. I bought a dazzle 80, what a piece of junk, I am returning it in soon. I'm looking for something under $200 that can capture analog, in either avi format or mpeg 1. I am looking to convert some of my childrens cartoons and home movies to vcd. I have been making vcds for about 2 years, so I have a fair amount of knowledge(I hope) about quality i'm looking for and what it entails. So my question is this, based on my budget($200) and my machine specs, what do you recommend?

    system specs
    PII 350
    Win 98/Me/XP
    256 Megs of Ram
6 gig and a 40 gig drive (both 5400 rpm)
I would use the 40 gig for capture
Win TV PCI ( don't want to use this for captures)

I'm looking for an external device that I can capture something of quality without dropping frames. I know my system is not the best, what whadda ya think? P.S. I would be using either an analog camcorder or vcr for the transfers.

I want to thank you in advance for any info that you can supply. This site rocks and it has helped me greatly in the past. Thanks for all the help!!!!

    Hi!
Try the PV231 card. It captures mpeg and you can burn a VCD with the file. Go to Skittelsen's site at:

    http://steve.kittelsen.com/pv231/

There you'll find a lot of info, where to buy, etc. It's only $85, but is the best I've seen for VCD capture. Be sure to use his register settings and ask him about his software settings
    Good Luck!
