They said DIVX which is a hack of MPEG4

  3. i just read the link, where did they say divx ? I only saw MPEG-4 being mentioned, there is no guarntee that it will play DivX encoded files, which may be a hack, but as far as I know, MPEG4 codec doesn't play DivX files.

There are certain satellite feeds in Europe, transmitting to mpeg 4 (knows as 4:4:2, 4:4:0)
The great difference with mpeg 2/DVB is that if you don't have perfect signal, you get lower picture! With mpeg 2, you need perfect signal...
Also, EBU feeds are on mpeg 4... (Eutelsat W3 - 7East)
You need special designed receivers for those transmissions...
Maybe this machine on the link, is one of those "multimedia terminals". In europe are on fashion now. Even if we don't know exactly what to do with them.
For sure, there is no Divx here...

  5. that's really neat.

but the solution from sigma is just a chip, not an actual
player. It will probably be a while before it finds its way
into any commercial dvd player, and then it will
boubtless require the proper firmware support to work
    correctly.

I'm also a little unclear about the codec. Does one need a
special liscence to create a player for the mpeg 4 codec
(a la DVD) or is it sufficient to have the hardware
    support?

If the former is true I doubt we'll ever see a standalone
mpeg4 player. If the latter is true I'll bet there's already
a prototype in some lab in Taiwan or mainland China.

  6. Sharp've already making a Handheld Mobil Unit in Japan "Sharp Zaurus M1-E1" which includes MPEG-4 movie decoder
    and
the Sharp's Internet View Cam that supports MPEG4.

  9. If you check on the front page of VCDhelp, there is a small utility that can get the Hollywood Plus playback AVI(DivX) and QuickTime(MOV) files using the card, and output to the TV as well.
