  1. I am currently looking for a new camera. I only want to spend around $2000. My last camera was a Canon GL1, but I think it's time to upgrade. I was looking at the JVC GY-HD110U, since I only shoot small films whenever I can, which has been sporadically at best over the last 5 years. I want to get back into it, but my knowledge is really lacking. The JVC GY-HD110U can only shoot in 720. Is that a huge deal? Is it something to altogether avoid because it can't do 1080? I just like the fact you can change lenses, which seems to be something that is only for the higher end models. Also, any positive/negative comments about this camera? Any help would be greatly appreciated? Thanks!

jvc doesn't make that model anymore, but it was great one. i wouldn't let the 720p vs 1080p thing change your mind. it's a true pro level cam with a manual focus only lens. drawbacks were really short battery life and tapes that are incompatible with HDV decks and other HDV cams.

The more desirable model is the GY-HM100U @ $2795 list. It is multi-format, can do 1920x1080 MPeg2 up to 35 Mb/s (similar to XDCAM-EX but at much lower price point). Recording is to SD flash (Class 6 for highest rates).

It also uses 3x CCD sensors but 1/4" not 1/3" and uses a fixed 10x zoom not the interchangeable Fujinon/Canon bayonet mount.

The main "missing" feature is live HDV streaming over Firewire. It has no Firewire port.
