  1. I used to use ALPlayer, which was itself a good media player, but its main disadvantage was it disabled Windows Aero when running and I don't really like having to disable Aero on a per-application basis.

So I switched to KMPlayer, which is slightly better, although it could not retain the "bob" deinterlace filter and gave a
filmized look to material recorded from DVB-T; which wasn't what I intended to happen!

How can I fix this within the KMPlayer itself, so as to avoid getting a "filmized" look?

  2. I don't think KMPlayer supports double frame rate deinterlacing. You could try VLC or MPCHC instead.

I did try MPCHC but it kept coming up with DirectX notices; and VLC froze/crashed sometimes.
I used to get KMPlayer to be able to support "bob" effect/double-frame-rate deinterlacing, but forgot how!

Any other alternatives? (and what's your opinions on ALPlayer?)

Try changing the output devices. For example, in MPCHC select View -> Options -> Playback -> Output... Try the options marked with **.
