  1. If anyone knows how to get the ADS USB Instant Video product to install on Windows XP, please respond. I have downloaded the XP drivers from ADS and I have also contacted tech support 3 or 4 times with no luck. Thanks to anyone that knows how to get this working.

  2. Can't say I know exactly how, but I did -finally- get USB Instant Video to work on XP (Sony VAIO, P4, 512 MB RAM), no thanks to ADS.

I believe the trick is (and this is the hard part) to remove all traces of the driver files installed from the worthless CD that came with it. That includes registry items, too. If you tried to install it on different USB ports, this can be a real pain (I should know!). I finally just did a fresh install of XP (to fix other problems, too), which did the trick.

Then, download the XP driver file from the ADS site. Extract it and install it BEFORE you plug in IV. Then, plug in IV, and XP should install the drivers (one for video, one for audio) automatically. You can check this in the Device Manager.

What about capture software? I'm using iuVCR, which is made for Windows 2000 and WDM. It works great with XP and IV (might take some fiddling to get audio to work. I still can't get audio to work in preview, but that's okay). I capture in uncompressed AVI mode. It only drops 2-3 frames/100 (at most) on a football video, which is acceptable for my use. Be sure to close all software, anti-virus, etc. when capturing.

Also, I did also -finally- get the Ulead VS 5 (which comes on the ADS CD) working (after downloading oodles of updates and turning down hardware accel on graphics board). But I think I'll stick with MovieShaker, which came with my VAIO.

I just bought IV cheap ($55) to do make some home VCDs from my old analog camcorder, tiding me over until I can afford a DV camcorder and some real video editing software. Not high quality, but it doesn't look too bad on TV for the money.

You would think ADS would provide better support, even for a low-cost product. I am not about to buy one of their higher-end products now.

  3. I was having the same problem, but got a file from Tech 6 at ADS that seemed to work. I had to completely uninstall the USB device from my machine, and then after running the new setup file, reboot the machine and directed the installation wizard to the new drivers supplied.

My only problem now - the software freezes up my PC after capturing video.

  4. Just an idea: perhaps you still have a driver file or registry entry left over from orginal install that's causing a conflict?

    Explanation:

I had same problem of capture software hanging up after capture with IV.

Tried some diffo capture programs, and had the same problem, so it must be the drivers?

Once I got rid of all traces of original drivers (by reinstalling XP) and only used downloaded XP driver update, IV is working fine (knock on wood). I capture lots of small clips, and it hasn't hung up once. I do make sure I close every possible program/process, defragment hard disk, etc.

One more idea: it seems I've had more trouble with audio driver than with video. Try capturing with no audio?
