Open VOB (File -> Open). Set Video Compression (Video->Compression). Set Audio Compression (Audio->Compression). Save new video (File->Save AVI)
    Read my blog here.

Well you'll find it in streams/stream list. Right click the stream on the left for the options.
It may not be necessary to do anything, since the original audio (in the case of AC3) will be transferred to the avi
    as-is and that's perfectly legitimate.

would I use anything as far as full processing mode? or direct stream copy?

For audio, you don't have to use anything but Direct stream copy if the audio is in a compatible format. If you want to convert the audio to a different format, or use some audio filters, then you need full processing. If you decide to use MP3 for audio output, I would add the Lame MP3 codec as the default one in VD is very limited.

The video conversion works the same way. Direct stream copy is used mostly for combining video clips. If you want to convert the video or filter or resize it, then you need Full processing. Also always make sure you set the codec in video Full processing mode, or you'll end up with huge RGB files by default.

Thank you all for your feedback. I like using automagic programs but I also like to know what I need to do for manual conversions. so thank you all.

VDM uses VFW format video codecs. The regular Xvid and Divx codecs work fine. For H.264, I use this one: http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/ Or if you want to avoid codec pack problems (I would), you can use ffdshow and it will give you access to most all codecs needed.

For Lame MP3, just follow the highlighted link in my post. AC3 ACM Decompressor may also be handy if you are working with AC3 audio.

Most all the codecs have installers or install instructions with them.

If you want a few VD video filters, try: http://www.infognition.com/VirtualDubFilters/

For audio filtering, I use Audacity.

  12. When I try to use the x264 it gives me this message:

x264vfw [warning]: Few frames probably would be lost. Ways to fix this:
x264vfw [warning]: - if you use VirtualDub or its fork than you can enable 'VirtualDub Hack' option
x264vfw [warning]: - you can enable 'File' output mode
x264vfw [warning]: - you can enable 'Zero Latency' option
