Hello VideoHelp.com Forums! I've been a lurker on a few occasions, since my tasks have been simple. Recently, I tried burning a DVD of a music recording with video (with terrible video quality, but that didn't matter - the video was just to verify the authenticity of the recording). Naive as I was, I quickly found out that DVD burning is a lot more complicated than filming, trim, burn. I was quite pressed for time, so this is the process that ended up taking place:

    1. Filmed a MOV file. The recorder is digital and saves to SD. Video: MPEG-4, 30fps, 640x480. Audio: PCM 48kHz 16bit (would have used 24bit, but didn't have enough space)
    2. Used VideoPad editor to trim off the ends of the clips, couldn't find a video trimming program that didn't re-encode because I didn't know where to look. Video: MJPG, 30fps, 640x480. Audio: PCM 48kHz 16bit
    3. Used FLAC to auto-process, got dazzled by the controls so I just did the little I knew how to do, and burned with ImgBurn, which installed with FLAC.

As you can tell, I'm not particularly literate in these matters, but I'd like to be, so I have two questions:
    1. Could you guys recommend some readings to get me familiar with the terms and the processes used? I want to know the basics, for now all I can offer in the way of specifics is "terminology", "file formats", "factors that affect quality", and "good programs." Just point me in the right direction and I'll get reading.
    2. Any suggestions for the improvement of the procedure I used?
EDIT: I'm not afraid to spend a little money, but I'm not quite prepared to spend money yet, so if possible, please list freeware alternatives alongside any pay-to-use software.

    Thank you very much!

EDIT: one more thing. Where are the forum rules, or is general forum etiquette enough here?
