  1. There's probably a simple explanation. Media info shows the following info for an avi file: file size 701mb video stream size 502 mb audio 51.9mb. I alsways assumed that the audio and video sizes pretty much aggregated to the file size.

    And if i run the file through virtualdub in direct stream copy mode, the file size decreases to 560MB

    So what is the 140-odd MB in the original file"doing"?

    It's no biggie i don't think, but i'd be interested to know what's happening.

  2. MediaInfo doesn't show any other streams in the original file?

    AVI files can have padding to align frames on power of 2 boundaries. But 150 MB of padding in a 701 MB file is excessive. You can use VirtualDub's hex editor with its RIFF chunk viewer to see what extra chunks there are.

    GSpot might also be able to tell you if there's wasted space/padding in the original video.
    If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

  4. No other streams, but it transpires that the video SHOULD be 10 minutes longer, ie it cuts off 10 mins from the end.
