Ok, thank you for the replies. I've gotten little headway on the AverTV HD card so far, but I'm also working on other things.

Get AVERTV HD. HDMI 1080i perfect record with VDUB.

E6600 + Win7 + 8GB = 0 dropped frame.

Unfortunately you mention HD captures which I have not really been focused on, however I will try your settings myself when I get a chance.

EDIT: I've gotten plenty of frame inserts using Test video capture (F7) and default Disk I/O. So I'm not sure if this test mode really removes I/O from the equation even though it doesn't truly write to disk. I can't find any documentation of what it actually does.

I'm thinking it must be something with the mainboard or power supply causing the timing issues as well, although I won't really get a chance to try different PSU, OS, etc for the computer for a day or two.

With better news, my AVT-8710 arrived, and its really useful with the procamp. I also managed to borrow someones Canopus ADVC110 and I'm using that now to get at least some results for the time being. The two seem to work rather well together. By default the levels on the ADVC110 seem a bit off, but with the TBC they come out nicely. So... I'm trying to get some tapes finally captured. Finally at least some progress, until I have to give this thing back

I've noticed my VCR is not really the best now having more capture hardware to compare to, but it will have to do for now. I get little black dots randomly from VHS and I'm not sure if that is a sign the heads are getting dirty. It's played probably 100+ hours of tape (if not more) in its lifetime. Some of my source material is apparently faulty as well, a few tapes indeed clip past 100 IRE regardless.

Hopefully I will be able to figure out the timing issues a bit better with the AverTV HD this week.

Here is an example of the kind of dark spots I get every so often, it comes and goes. Happens regardless of the tape used.



As far as the AverTV... have not had much of a chance to fiddle with it :/

Well to sum up the situation I gave up on the raw capture cards for the time being. I got my hands on an ATI HD 600 but it has the dreaded AGC as well, but it was dirt cheap so no loss. As far as the AverTV HD I returned it today as well. Timing issues aside I did not like its (unadjustable) oversharp S-Video caps.

So... I'm using a borrowed Canopus ADVC110 and borrowed JVC HR-S3600U until my HR-S7600U arrives in the post. It will do fine (and has been so far) for my Hi-Fi recorded tapes that I have. Unfortunately not so much without the internal TBC for my oldest "2-head crap Emerson VCR on EP" recorded tapes. Oh well I will deal with it later.

I'm getting the "field lag" that occurs cos of timing errors on the original tape as described elsewhere. Without the AV-8710 the picture noticeably wobbles vertically as well in these spots. (Regardless, the levels are still AMAZING considering this tape is in such poor shape. My oldest stuff never looked better). Mega bonus points if you recognize what this is from.



Anything else I did not record with that seriously crap VCR back in the early 90s look fine. I'm now getting excellent captures regardless, no black spots and good levels, verifying that my other VCR was garbage.
