  1. Howdy yall. I'm new to the forum but have been into video editing for a while now for various things like my iphone and playstation 3 and so have spent some time reading through VideoHelp forums.

Nowadays, I'm into converting things that are in HD already to a compressed format that I can store on an external HD and play on my PS3 which is now attached to a gorgeous panny G25. It's only 42 inches but I'm only 2 ft from it, so it's pretty cool.

Anyhow, PS3 supports WMV if WMV9 (VC-1 simple). It does not support VC-1 adv profile (wmv11).

If i have to convert something (transcode) from wmv11 (wvc-1) to something my PS3 can play, I'll probably use AVIDEMUX or Handbrake to compress to H.264/mp4 so that I get the free benefit of iPhone playability. But I'd like to save the time and lossiness.

So my question is...is there a way to remux a WVC1 video to VC-1 simple, WMV9, without re-encode, (obviously).

I've read through the differences between the two codecs but the conclusion I come to is that they are both VC-1 compliant, it's just that the adv profile supports more things like interlacing. But if my video wasn't using these advancements, could i remux it somehow to wmv9 (simple vc-1)? It would obviously be awesome because then I could play it at original quality on my PS3. I'm sure if the video had the extra features it would fail. But if it didn't, are they similar enough? Or are they completely different codecs and this is a pipe dream?
My plasma's only 42 inches, but I sit 24 inches from it. It's pretty cool.

    no, requires re-encoding

"wvc1" is fourcc code for the advanced profile - frequently called "vc-1" but actually "vc-1" encompasses all WMV profiles

"wmv3" is the fourcc code for the simple profile - frequently called "wmv9"
