I have run several tests encoding video with cce sp 2.64 and tmpgenc 2.51 and it is my opinion that tmpg is superior to cce in all areas except for speed, which it is of course very lacking. First of all, my video has all been shot on a sony mini-dv camera and loaded and edited into premier 6.0. The most demanding project I have done as far as encoding is concerned is a video of my son's track season. Needless to say there is a lot of motion in that video. I have never been able to encode video with any type of motion that didn't have the flutter in it with cce sp. (I assume this has to do with the top field first issues.) The exception to this would be when I have a slow motion shot rendered at 50% speed. I don't know, but I am assuming that this is because the bottom and top fields are identical and then it doesn't matter whether it is bottom or top field first. Furthermore, the quality of video, ie the richness and color of the video is much better with tmpg. The best results I got were of course at high bitrates. I was encoding with tmpg at 7000 average 4000 min. and 9000 max. 2 pass vbr. I used the same settings on cce sp but using 3 pass vbr. My finished product was always burned to dvd using ulead movie factory. Since I have not been able to get rid of the "flutter" in high motion video, I would appreciate if others could tell me the methods they used that might have worked for them using cce. For me, it didn't seem to matter whether I checked the "top field first box or not." The flutter was not a problem with tmpg. Equally disapointing with cce sp to me besides the flutter was the richness and color of the video. If anyone has suggestions on improving that with cce I would also appreciate feedback. The bottom line to me, seems to be that tmpg beats cce in every area as related to quality. I just wish it was faster. By the way my computer is a 1.4gh athlon with 512 ddr ram.
