  2. Ouch. But to put in in perspective:

    the chipmaker goes on to say it now expects first-quarter revenue to be in the $11.3-12.1 billion range.
    After expenses etc they were expecting about 3 billion in profits. PITA for users though.

    especially bad news for the poor users who never finds out their new hotrod is damaged goods because their vendor never tells them.... and they aren't computer knowledgeable. pretty much like dell never told all their customers their p4 chipsets had bad caps.

  4. The chipsets didn't have bad caps, some of the motherboards had bad capacitors. I've done a lot of Optiplex SX280, and a Optiplex 745 as the latest.
    If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

    you beat me to it, i just got through linking to the anandtech article in the computer sub forum.

    regardless, i'm guessing amd must be ecstatic and i get to hold onto my tax refund (am i glad i didn't have the money to run out and buy a sandy bridge based setup as soon as they were available).

    the portion that has the problem is the sata controller, specifically the 3gbs part, hardly "experimental technology", the 6gbs portion is working fine.

    Some of the Dell monitors had rotten capacitors as well.
