I had my encoder PC set to do automatic updates and it decided to update and restart the PC during a 5 hour MKV encode, wiping out the file. Now I just have the OS check for them and decide when (Or not) to download and install them.

thats why i've had mine left off for the last 9 years...i rarely have issues where an update from MS is needed immediately so it effects me none to have update left on for any reason

That is one downside to auto updates. You can turn off updates or disconnect the machine from the internet during long renders.

The argument for auto critical update is this. When Microsoft issues an update, they are announcing in detail a vulnerability. The bad guys can immediately attack that vulnerability and will have success with unupdated machines.

While this is certainly true, unfortunately Microsoft doesn't always do the best job in testing their own updates and there is always a chance that you may have problems after applying one. I will admit that this is less of an issue for individual users than for servers. On my previous job we had a policy that no Windows updates could be installed on our Exchange servers until they had passed testing on special servers set up for that purpose. We had to implement that policy after having our Exchange servers break several times after applying a "critical" update that nothing to do with Exchange. So we basically ran about 2 weeks behind on even critical updates.
