I teach painting classes and would like to hook up my Canon Vixia HF200 to a digital projector to show the work as I am working to a class of 40 student. Can I hook the camera directly to the projector and the projector will recognize it? So far, no luck trying to run it through my computer as a webcam - laptop won't recognize it.
I have not purchased the projector yet and wondered what connections I should look for.
Thanks for any help.

Most newer projectors have HDMI inputs and at least my HD camcorder has a mini HDMI output also. IF the camera can output live video over the HDMI and you get a cable or adapter similar to this, it might work: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10242&cs_id=1024201&p_id=...seq=1&format=2 I don't think I have that cable around here, so unable to try this at present. You should be able to check the operators manual for the camcorder to see if it will work for live output. Most camcorder manufacturers will let you download the op manual from their sites if you don't have it handy.
The other common inputs for projectors are composite, S-Video, maybe VGA or DVI, and component. HDMI would be better quality most times, but component should also work well. One site for projector information: http://www.projectorcentral.com/
It looks like your camcorder has these outputs/connectors:
Connector Type
1 x Component video output,
1 x Composite video/audio output,
1 x HDMI,
1 x Microphone,
1 x USB,
1 x Headphones
One of our members with experience with that particular camera may be able to tell you if it will work.
And welcome to our forums. -
Thanks for the quick reply. I've reviewed the manual prior to posting and found they only cover connecting to a TV, computer or printer. There was no reference regarding live output to another device. I suppose as a last resort, I can order the projector, try it and send it back if it does not work but I will eat shipping charges.
Hoping someone has tried this with success and can shed some insight.
Thank you -
I am looking at the Optoma HD20 projector to run my Hd Canon camera toa live video feed for my class presentations. Can anyone tell me if this camera would be a good choice to use to show what I am doing during my class session as we work on a painting together. Thanks

Connecting any current HD camcorder to an HD-capable projector works, but the issue is with the connectors. Current camcorders have a mini-HDMI connector, and an adapter is needed to connect to normal HDMI-equipped projectors. HDMI connectors and adaptors can be thick, unwieldy, and expensive, and what quality is lost when using Y Pb Pr component instead is hard to see. So I use the latter.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
