So I don't use SUPER much but sometimes I do. I saw that there was a new version and sadly I "upgraded". (I'm using XP.) The new version kept crashing so I uninstalled it and re-installed the old version (jan 2, 2010) but now it won't run either . It starts and promptly dies before even splashing the screen. I'm not sure what little bread crumbs it has left itself causing it not to run the old version. I'm not that gifted in these things. I did do a regedit and removed the erightsoft entries but that didn't help. Suggestions?

Never had that problem. I've never needed to upgrade SUPER cause the version I have works perfectly. I rarely use SUPER but when I do it works perfectly.

SUPER to me is one of those tools I too rarely use, but it's seems to be always there when nothing else works - and it has never failed me either, so I'm stumped as to your problem being with SUPER.

As a guess, I think the bread crumbs fell into your ffdshow installation somehow. Now SUPER is annoyed and refuses to work as a result since ffdshow is crapping out on it.

And when ffdshow is flaking out, I have no cure for it.

    Which reminds me...

Ground Hog Day is approaching. Just like it gives us a sign here in North America as to when spring is approaching, I use ffdshow flake-outs as a sign that it's time to reformat my hard drive, which I do seasonally/annually.

Exactly. I would NEVER think of SUPER being my everyday encoder.

Likewise. SUPER really fits the expression, "Jack of all trades, master of none."

No, eRightSoft has always taken measures to prevent all previous versions of SUPER from running when you install a version (well, probably every version except the very first ); they've adamantly insisted upon not supporting all older versions, especially on their forums, where the only response (if you're found to be using even a version a point update off) no matter the problem would be to insist you update.

Do I have any idea what it changes to make sure earlier versions don't run? No. I'm surprised nobody's posted a list or reference somewhere, though.

By the way, I mean no disrespect to the authors of SUPER. It really is a fabulous tool - especially for the right individual, unlike some of us here who are video geeks and will (happily and unhappily) be compelled to fiddle with a thousand options and combinations and not notice how the day has turned to night has turned to day, etc... when SUPER could have done it much faster...

@Ai Haibara: Yes indeed. Due to the nature of SUPER, I don't blame its devs for being reluctant to support older versions. It's enough work keeping up what goes in to SUPER today, but supporting older versions of SUPER would be like supporting older versions of the dozens of apps it uses too. Forget it.

But I do believe this problem here is likely not SUPER, but something else, like I suggested ffdshow, or maybe Haali, or even AviSynth is causing it problems at startup.

It's one thing to stop supporting older versions - that's understandable.
Quite another to actively prevent re-installing of an earlier version.
