Test #1: Does the AVI play in QuickTime? (I think it will not show video.)

The DVD mpeg2enc preset defaults to decoding with QuickTime. This means that ffmpegX "asks" QuickTime to read the source file. If QuickTime fails to decode the video, then ffmpegX will fail to encode video in the output file, perhaps as just black.

    Solutions (pick one):
    • Install Perian. Perian will help QuickTime decode many formats and video codecs that QT wasn't able to decode without it. (Perian also has hard-subbing ability of its own, so disable that feature if you want ffmpegX to handle soft sub on the output DVD.)
    • Use a different decoder. The DVD mpeg2enc preset allows setting a different decoder in the Options tab. Set the Decode with mplayer checkbox to let mplayer read the source file. (Using mplayer decoding will result in hard subtiles.)
    • Use a different decoder. The DVD mpeg2enc preset allows setting a different decoder in the Options tab. De-select both Decode with QuickTime and Decode with mplayer to have ffmpegX use built-in ffmpeg to read the source file.

The soft subtitles on DVD encoded by ffmpegX may be set to "not show" by default. Use your remote or Console to turn them on.
