Hi, I searched but couldn't find an answer to my question.

I have 2 videos that I'd like to overlay and create a picture in picture effect. Can someone refer me to a program and guide to do this?

    1) Video 1 is main video.
    2) Video 2 needs to be shrunk down to a smaller size, and then added to video 1.
2a) I know how to use a converter to convert it to a smaller size. Something like Xilisoft Video Converter.
2b) How do you specify the location of the inserted video? (top left or right, bottom left or right, middle of bottom screen, etc)
    3) This assumes audio is from video 1.

    For later:
After the above is done, I'd like to add a custom sound track / audio. For that, I'm sure I can search and find plenty of guides.

    What I'm doing:

I have a track video of my day at Laguna Seca, taken using a GoPro HD camera mounted externally on the sunroof of my car. I also have an in-car 640x480 30fps footage from a pocket camera that I want to shrink down and overlay into the external video.

Once I learn how to do this, I can do various cool things at future track days, like point that 2nd camera facing the rear and overlay for a rear-view mirror PIP effect showing cars I passed.

    Thanks for your help!

this is usually simply done with an editor by dropping each clip into the timeline and selecting where it's placed...see if there's a free editor you can use under "tools" on the menu on the upper left of the page

For these tasks you need a NLE. 'Picture-in-picture' is either done by placing the 2nd video on an overlay track or as a 'moving path'

Can you guys recommend a program from the Tools section that has this feature? So far, I've used avidemux to flip the video, cut out the segments I want, and convert to .mp4 (xvid), but it doesn't seem to have the features described.

    Sorry, total noob. Thanks!

Don't go to xvid until you are completely finished.

  6. Try using virtualdub or vitualdubmod (has a convenient script editor) with avisynth. The layer filter makes this easy provided that you are comfortable with scripts. A list of the free open source programs I use to do this is included at http://getoddnews.com/2011/01/20/colorscreenmask/
