need help with Korean and Chinese fonts for Movie Maker

I make quite a bit of demonstration videos in Movie Maker and have never had a problem with text (titles, subtitles) in Turkish, Russian or Greek. However, I can not get Movie Maker to recognize Chinese or Korean.

My colleague translated a bunch of subtitles and sent them to me in Excel. When I open the files in Excel they look like their appropriate characters. When I try to copy and paste into Movie Maker, they come up as just boxes. This is the same way I've done all the other languages so it's very frustrating that it's not working.

Can anyone help or advise which forum I should go to for help? I've done countless web searches and haven't found anything.

I was really hoping someone could provide better help for you, but since even a partial answer is better than nothing, here we go...

I've played around with Cyrililc subs a little. Some of this info may be useful to you even though you are working with what they call CJK character sets. My experience is that almost no subtitle utilities support Unicode subtitles. Most subtitling programs require you to use specific character sets. For example for Cyrillic this means your subs need to be in CP-1251. To get a subtitle ripping program to work with Cyrillc subs, I had to go into the Control Panel and under Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use", I had to pick Russian and reboot. So the big question for you is to first determine somehow if Movie Maker accepts Unicode subs or not and determine whether the subs you have are in Unicode or some other format.

If Movie Maker does not accept Unicode subs then you will need to follow my directions above and pick the language you need, one at a time, for Korean and then Chinese to try to get the subs recognized. You are completely on your own for this. And I need to warn you that if you do this that you may find some of your problems to now be in Korean or Chinese characters on your PC and you will definitely need to be able to read those languages to use your PC at that point. Unintended things could happen from doing what I am talking about, so you accept all responsibility and risk should you try it.

I cannot read any CJK character sets so I can offer no practical help here. Good luck. Note that supporting Cyrillic and Greek is rather trivial compared to the CJK languages and Turkish uses the Latin alphabet with some accent marks so I am not surprised at all that Movie Maker supports these. Perhaps Movie Maker simply supports Western character sets. I don't know.
