My Mum is sending me a sports DVD from the UK. I am in the US. She recorded it, but hasn't been able to finalize it (she's not a techy) so I will be receiving the DVD unfinalized.

Can I finalize it once it gets here using some kind of software?

I am not sure of the make of DVD Recorder but can find out.

This is a very good question which deserves a better result than the silence it has gotten so far.

You can't count on being able to finalize it in software. I've read about some people getting very lucky and being able to do so with something like ImgBurn or Nero, but that doesn't always work. I've read about someone using (I think) Nero Recode to copy the DVD to a new disc which was then finalized. And I've heard that sometimes IsoBuster or ISOPuzzle may be able to get the tracks off the unfinalized DVD so you can make a new DVD with them. But I've also heard of failures in your situation too.

Try to copy the dvd to your HDD Isobuster first, without it being finalized it'll show as being blank to your PC. Once it's on your PC you can make a copy of it.

  4. I have done very well using ISO Buster on disks like these to save the video files out and then reauthoring them and burning onto a new DVD.
Occasionally I have to perform an intermediate step on the files ISO Buster has recovered in order for the playing times not to get truncated and the videos end prematurely. Sometimes I do this with MPEG-VCR and other times I have had good success when there are a lot of files by loading them into XMediaRecode and using the batch function to save them out to MPG2 files at a high bitrate. There are probably better methods than that, but it works well for me.

For the sake of others having a search lead to this thread, and for another option, I've had lots of success with NeroVision.

I have taken unfinalized DvDs from a few DVRs and used the Import function to recognize, and extract, the titles within.
I hate VHS. I always did.
