  1. So after giving up on making my LCD TV to work directly with a Verizon Set-Top-Box, I am now looking into
using a USB TV Tuner to watch TV on my laptop (and then connecting this to my LCD monitor).

I am looking at these 2 devices: http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=usb%20tuner&origkw=USB%20Tuner&sr=1

Now, my main question is : If I hook up the coaxial output from my STB through this
USB stick into my Laptop will I be able to view in HD ?

    Thanks,
    Gotham

It depends where you're from. This seems to work, or not work, depending on where you live - and I can't say for sure whether it's directly from your wall or from your STB for broadcast quality, or in analog directly from your STB (or even from your wall).

As for HD, it also depends on your laptop if it can handle it.

But if it promises tuning, then try all options and see what works in your area.

And I would pick Hauppauge over Pinnacle any day. Hauppauge has more credibility in its products IMO.
I hate VHS. I always did.

The Verizon set-top box only outputs SD over its coax out on analog channel 3 or 4, which means HD isn't possible from that source. Assuming it's an HD STB with component out, there are only two choices for a USB HD capture device.

  4. If you don't need video capture you probably want something like this:

    No HD though.

Do you have Vertizon HD service? Why did you give up on Verizon?

The channels you will get with a USB2 tuner are the SD analog cable channels plus the local clearQAM SD/HD cable channels. The latter requires the tuner have clearQAM support and you may find it difficult to find them. These tuners also pick up over the air ATSC if you put up an antenna.

If you get an HD set top box from Verizon, you will get all the HD channels in the subscribed plan. You connect the HD cable box to the LCD-TV with analog component or HDMI cables.
