Hi, im new to converting and what not, but not new to movies lol, who is.
anyways. i have a Sony BDP-S570 with a usb port, and i want to have a bunch of movies on my external hard drive, plugged into it, also, my surround sound will not decode DTS :/. the blu ray player will play quite a few file formats according to the manual but i dont know how to get all my movies into any of those formats, nor do i know what format would be best to batch convert them to,
the media i am looking to convert is in either the standard 700mb divx or xvid avi files, with the occasional mkv, i want to keep as much quality as possible, while keeping the files small. also it seems that the hdd needs to be fat32, and as you know, 4 gig file limit, so keep that in mind when making a suggestion please.
THANK YOU ALL for reading this and thanks a SH!T ton more for posting a helpful reply, i WILL NOT be a hit and run poster, this may be my first post, but it is not my last i promise you that, i am subscribing to this thread, and will reply asap when someone else does

Many of your files will probably work fine without conversion. If you want to compress use handbrake and convert to mp4 with h264 video. Under the video tab can you adjust the output file size.

thank you for your reply Baldrick, but sadly my situation has changed, i would like to, for the hd content only, instead of using an external hard drive, use a dual layer dvd, now tell me the best (not necessarily the easiest) way to achive this, below is the exported list of all the information i could grab from the file using G-Spot
    FILE_NAME File.avi
    FILE_SIZE 6,016,501,760
    CONT_AUDIO_STREAM_COUNT 1
    CONT_BASETYPE AVI(.AVI)
CONT_SUBTYPE Multipart OpenDML AVI (3 parts),
    CONT_TOTAL_BITRATE 0
    VIDEO_BITRATE 3904
    VIDEO_CODEC_NAME XviD ISO MPEG-4
    VIDEO_CODEC_STATUS Codec(s) are Installed
    VIDEO_CODEC_TYPE XVID
    VIDEO_DAR 2.400
    VIDEO_DURATION 2:28:08
    VIDEO_FRAME_COUNT 213098
    VIDEO_FRAMES_PER_SEC 23.976
    VIDEO_MPEG4 MPEG-4
    VIDEO_MPEG4_BVOP B-VOP
    VIDEO_PAR 1.000
    VIDEO_PICS_PER_SEC 23.976
    VIDEO_QF 0.106
    VIDEO_SAR 2.400
    VIDEO_SIZE_X 1920
    VIDEO_SIZE_Y 800
    AUDIO_BITRATE 1509
    AUDIO_CHANNEL_COUNT 5
    AUDIO_CODEC 0x2001 (Dolby DTS)
    AUDIO_CODEC_STATUS Codec(s) are Instaled
    AUDIO_SAMPLE_RATE 48000

The truth is that BluRay players tend to be kind of fussy when playing files. The best option is to buy a small form media player like one of the Western Digital models. They'll play almost everything without conversion. If you have an amplifier or receiver that can decode DTS, the WD players can send DTS to them for playback without problems.

There is indeed. A program like tsmuxer or multiAVCHD might what you want to use. Do note that some BluRay players require AVCHD format and some require BluRay format. You'll have to risk a disc to find out which, if either, your player supports. Sony officially supports AVCHD so that really should work for you, but my very limited testing on my brother's player had one DVD-5 disc in BluRay format play OK there.

If you're going to use DL media, use only Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. Everything else is low quality.

Unfortunately Kodak DL media is made in India. You've got about a 99% chance this is bad. I don't know who the manufacturer is, but almost all Indian manufacturers are bad. For best results burn SLOW... absolutely NOT at 8x. 4x is better and consider even 2x if you can stand to wait longer. Unless someone posts later and assures us that Kodak DVD+R DL is made by the same company Verbatim uses, then 4x should be OK and maybe even 8x is OK.
