I'm actually new to using MakeMKV. Recently I've started using it and have come across a (serious) problem. Here's my log:
- insert DVD
- start DVDFab Passkey
- run MakeMKV !!! with Direct Drive Access OFF !!!
- choose DVD drive
- let MakeMKV read the disc structure
And that's where MakeMKV seems to fail: in the status window it says "Using Direct Disc Access". This causes trouble with protected discs, since obviously the read routines work around DVDFab Passkey and access the protected DVD. It therefore fails to create MKVs for protected discs.
I even checked with Regedit to see whether MakeMKV accepts my choice of deactivating direct drive access.
I hope anybody can help, and/or give advice on how to make MakeMKV work with DVDFab Passkey.

I've never used anything with makemkv and it worked with all it's default settings. Try disabling dvdfab passkey.

I have a number of protected DVDs in my collection which I want to back up. MakeMKV won't decrypt them without running DVDFab Passkey or AnyDVD in the background. Any other suggestions?

dvdfabhddecrypter > iso > dameontooldlite(free) load on virtual drive> use makemkv it'll think the decrypted dvd folder is on a dvd drive also this does not involve reencoding like handbrake.

Anyhow no idea how to make MakeMKV work with AnyDVD or DVDFab Passkey? Yet I've copied/decrypted the movie to HD and then run MakeMKV. But I guess there should be a way to get around the copying to HD...

I was under the impression that MakeMKV bypassess the protection without the need for third party software like AnyDVDHD or DVDFab Passkey. From the MakeMKV FAQ:
MakeMKV supports all commercial Blu-ray discs protected by latest versions of AACS and BD+. Occasionally, when movie studios update AACS and BD+ versions, a new version of MakeMKV needs to be downloaded. For the entire history of MakeMKV, the program was always updated next day after or days before the release date of disc employing new protection.
That being said, I usually use MakeMKV on a mounted .iso image ripped to my hard drive using AnyDVD. MakeMKV usually pops up a warning complaining about the disk being ripped using AnyDVD, but it still works.

I was under the impression that MakeMKV didn't actually 'decrypt' anything. Rather it works as a DVD player would, only instead of sending to the screen it sends the MPEG2 info to a MKV file. Therefore it should be able to handle any DVD that can be played.

I used to use makemkv to make my bd's - mkv but ever since I brought a bluray player that does it all I found it useless. In your case just decrypt with dvdfabdecrypter if makemkv doesn't work (yes makemkv can get past some dvd/bd protections but dvdfab and anydvd are updated faster IMO, all makemkv does is bd/dvd to mkv container no re-encoding.
