  1. Hei

This is my first post here so please don`t chop my head off.
I have been true some of the posts here, but it so many and i diden`t really find the answer of the question i was after.

Im looking for the best way to copy my 700 DVD library over to my computer, i have 16TB disk in RAID 1 ready for it. (will buy more if needed)
I have some priorities in what im after.

1: Good quality ofc, sound and picture. DTS, Dolby. (and maybe be able to switch between stereo, dts, dolby, but not that important)
    2: That its ONE file
3: That i can have the original SUB`s with the rip, (and maybe be able to change it in the movie)
4: And that the rip is not larger then the actual movie
5: The Rip is readable in most streamers. (AVI,MKV etc etc.)

And if its possible, to have the DVD menu. But thats not crazy important.

    Best regards
    Kristian

Rip to an ISO with anydvdhd and you can keep everything. But it's not that good for streaming, you need a good media player that supports dvd iso.

  3. I have tried HandBrake now, its quit good. Ripping the DVD over to MKV.
Almost all streamers are reading MKV atm, so thats fine.

I did get one sub at least. Gona try see the movie on my WD-Live now, to see that i get the sub there to.
The only thing really missing is the DVD menu.

But please tell me if theres a better way to do this. I want the same standard on all my Rips.

I agree with handbrake. The alternative would be makemkv.

  5. Depends how much time and effort you want to put into the endeavour. Personally I favor ISOs, played by a computer; rip half a dozen a night, and you'll be done your 700 discs by summer. I use DVD Decrypter for most, DVDFab HD Decrypter or DVDFab Passkey for the rest.

  6. With Handbreak you can make .mkv and .mp4. What is the best format and whats the difference with them?

Both are containers as far as i can see?!?

The ONE huge dumb thing about .mkv that i can find is that i cant "store" them in Win Media Center bc i cant play them there.
It would be very nice to ha a format that is supported by a media center.

Pretty sure the WDTV Live/Plus/Hub handles DVD ISOs now. http://www.wdtvlive.com/products/which

    "Supports DVD Navigation"

Probably came with a later firmware. I'll have to give it a try this weekend.

  8. And one more thing.

When i use Handbreak it tells me that it dont support the DVD im trying to copy.

Your Source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which HandBreak does not support.

I realy like the way HandBreak are "ripping" the disk, bc i can chose witch sub and audio i want.
Is there something i can do so i can use HandBreak on all DVD`s

If the DVD is copy protected you must first copy the dvd to your harddrive using a program such as dvddecrypter. You may be able to avoid it all together by using makemkv.

dvddecrypter hasn't been updated in quite some time. You'll need to run something like anydvdhd or dvdfabdecrypter.

Had one of my wife's work-out DVDs close by and created an ISO from imgburn. It came up and worked fine on my WDTV Live. I'll have to try a real movie disk and see what happens.

  13. I have a related question-

I'm using Handbrake to covert DVDs to H264 for playback on a GoFlexTV set top box. I see the following results:

    1. If I make a DVD ISO of an interlaced source in IMG Burn and play it on the GoFlex, I do not see the comb effect
    2. If I take that same DVD source and make an MKV without any deinterlacing filter, combing is very evident in the playback
    3. If I make the MKV with Decomb or Deinterlace filter on, picture is much better than (2) but I still see some combing

I'm not sure what the issue is here, is it: a) H264 does not correct preserve the interlacing information therefore it's not converted to progressive correctly in the player or b) The GoFlexTV only converts Interlace -> Progressive from DVD sources? If a), is there some way to compress the file but preserve the interlacing?
