Hello there,
I am trying to capture (digitalise) VHS onto my hard drive. However, I ran into two major problems. Firstly, the screen is black and white and I do not know how to change it into colour. Secondly, when I capture the footage, the video quality is quite bad (Format: AVI, Compression: YUY2, Resolution: 640-480), but every second takes up over 10MB! I was very shocked about this. It would be nice if you could help me with these problemsThank you.
Philip

The Black and White issue could well be that you have attempted to capture a NTSC (US) tape - set your capture for NTSC with PAL(UK) equipment - search the forum for topics/posts about Pal60 for more information.

But I will also echo aedipuss's comment. We need more information as to what capture device you are using and capture program you are using. Uncompressed capture will use a lot of disk space. Your disk will probably not be able to keep up and drop a lot of frames hence the result you are seeing.

I suggest you use this as you:
 - seem to not care about restoration
 - have little space

If your tape is ntsc played on a pal deck you will have hue shifts (about 9 marks) and matrix convertions aswell (rec601 -> rec709), this will have to be restored properly imo (big avi file, yuy2).*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE

It's also possible to get a B&W picture if you're using composite into the s-video connection (using an adapter)
and the input is set to s-video in the software, rather than composite.

I'm going to borrow something from a post long ago, but are you using your bare hands to throw the magic video particles into the computer?
