I want to compress a a long HD video and upload it to the hosting site. Can it be compressed to the rmvb or rar compression file or they only support SD video? I hope the compressed video will not lose the video quality very much and will be easily played after downloading. Can you also recommend a good Video File Compressor tool? Thank you.

You can compress it with .rar or rmvb, but be aware they are totally different formats. RMVB is a video format that is proprietary and needs a RM codec to play. .rar is a data compression format that will work with any format, video or otherwise. The problem is video is not so easily compressed as it's already compressed. The file size may not be reduced much with a .rar file. .rar has the advantage that it can be packaged into small packets and may be easier to distribute and it can use PAR files for data integrity and error correction. But the end user would need a .rar decompression program to extract the file.

In general, you need to compress your video to a better, smaller, more compressed format if you need small files. X264 is one of the better high compression formats at present. RM is somewhat old and hard to use and very limited for software, IMO. .rar isn't likely to reduce your file size much, just make it more difficult to decode.

Most times when you re-encode, you will lose quality. There's no magic solution. I would advise you try a few of the higher compression codecs and see the results for yourself. You can use a short representative sample and a few different codecs for testing. But X264 seems the best at present for high compression and decent quality. If it's HD, you might want to resize it to a smaller framesize, as that will give you more bitrate for encoding when you reduce the bitrate to make the size smaller.
