UPDATE:
sigh.....there must be an incompatibility between the LG RC897T DVD/VCR/Tuner player and this "Paramount" Deep Space Nine TV box set. DS9 is NTSC 5.1 Region 1 and LG DVD player supports that. (even cleaned DVD lens, reset player, and hacked my player to be region free, no luck).
Of the 49 Deep Space Nine discs....I can read only 2 (used to be 3), 18 give "unknown disc format", and 29 just spin forever attempting to read.
Of MY 97 DVDs I can play them ALL......
(including another Paramount TV box set)
I don't know whether the problem lies in the DVD player or the discs......since my neighbors with their SONY DVD players can play ALL the first 13 discs I tried on their players. DVD player repair men I called couldn't help......neither could LG customer service...just said send it in for service. (but out of warranty).
any thoughts? Suggestions?
obviously it would be hassle to send it in and expensive when it may not even be fixable....
thanx.....mark
HI,
My 2-yr old LG RC897T DVD-VCR combo currently has "perfect" video and audio for 2 TV box sets bought from China, 3 "Original US" TV box sets bought in US, and DVDs burned personally from TV movies. BUT, I just bought a brand NEW 7-yr TV DVD box set of Star Trek-Deep Space Nine in beautiful plastic containers from a reliable US distributor in Florida.....and, it won't play !!! First season's 6 DVDs - can play 3 of them but the other 3 keep trying to read forever with the spinning disc in upper right corner of TV display. Second season of 6 DVDs - 5 can't read and 6th causes "unknown disc ...". BUT, I took it to 4 neighbors and they all had no problem playing ALL DVDs (note: they were all Sony players). I tried hard DVD reset, using a DVD lens cleaner, and even hacking the code to make it region free with no luck. LG customer service could only say send it in for repair.
Does it have anything to do with the laser alignment, etc? I spoke with 1 repair guy and he said he had no idea. Any thoughts / suggestions??
thanx......mark

Are they US region 1 discs? or are they region free discs from outside the US? If they are officially released discs, you have a faulty player. Personally, I would replace it, rather than have it serviced. If they aren't official discs, then you simply have a disc incompatibility issue.

HI,
thanx for the comments......
The 7-season Deep Space Nine is a brand new region 1 set produced by the original US Paramount manufacturer.
(bought on EBAY for $123)
I subsequently confirmed that I could play them on a SAMSUNG and also a very cheap ASTAR player.
As a matter of fact. for $4 I managed to pick up the cheap ASTAR from someone moving
(very thin player that doesn't take up much room in my Whalen TV stand)
So, I'll settle for using the ASTAR one for this DVD set until I eventually buy a Nice Blu-Ray player
(or possibly replace my current LG combo with a new "Panny" combo)
yes, probably the LG player.....either defective or trouble with the RCE on this dvd set
