there are some interesting educational files online that were produced in concert with NASA, somehow, but they can't be downloaded. The program was govt. funded. I'm wondering that since I can watch the video, the files must be resident on my computer at some time ... The people who archive the files say they can't make them downloadable because of lack of time and funding. I don't want to pirate them but it seems to me that since the science series was paid for by taxpayer funds, they should be given to the public. I don't mean me but to everyone.

You could try downloading them with streamtransport.

I'm wanting to know if the site is accurate in stating that they would have to go through a lot of time and trouble to make these files available for download. It's a public policy issue mostly. We paid for the project but can't download the video... Maybe the answer is to put segments on youtube and have a link so people can see them more easily.

    No, it's not accurate.

I'm guessing you mean links for the NASA stuff? I don't know which videos the OP is talking about but this is probably my favourite NASA link. If they've got spare download capacity it'll take you to one of several live streaming webcams on the International Space Station - some internal but several external as well. (I think you need MS Media player and may have to download a plug-in for it to work properly, but not certain about this.) I'm guessing that the videos that the OP wants to download are probably off one of the links from this page. (BTW, if you want the image full screen then you need to right-click on the video window => Zoom => full screen. Esc cancels)

I've had good results downloading videos using Firefox and the Flashgot add-on, but it hasn't worked on everything I've tried it on so it's not a universal solution.

Typical! I've just clicked on the link to test it and they've stopped streaming at the moment! PAH!

Stream Transport didn't work for that. But you can easily get the MMS link from a browser and see that the stream is:

    mms://a1709.l1856953708.c18569.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1709/18569/v0001/reflector:53708

You can then use VLC or any program that lets you save MMS streams. VLC cap attached.
