Apologies if this is posted in the wrong area, I am new to the Forum and to the world of PS3!

I have just purchased a PS3 and I am trying to connect it to my Sony KDL-V32A12U HD TV.

The TV is only 1080i but I know the PS3 is compatible with that; I am trying to use an HDMI cable on the AV5 (HDMI) input but alas I am not even getting a picture or sound.
The only way I can get the PS3 to work currently is via composite cables but I am not getting the benefit of 1080i.
I have had the PS3 & HDMI cable checked and all is fine (Sony shop), they set the PS3 via their HDMI cable to accept 1080i but when I tried it on my set at home - nothing!
They have said I probably need a new TV!! (trying to sell me one).
I have now had to revert back to composite cable hook up to get things working but I am sure there are some experts out there who can provide me with an "Idiots Guide" on how to resolve this issue.

Thank you in advance for your help and patience.

    Kind regards,
    Ian

This is a little tricky but I do it to dub to my hauppauge hd pvr.

1 - connect both your composite and hdmi cables to the ps3 and tv.

2 - turn on tv to composite for ps3 setting

3 - go to settings on ps3 and select display output choice menu - select hdmi output -

4 - select hdmi input that your ps3 is connected to on your tv - select ok on the ps3 now that your hdmi is connected and displayed properly on your hdtv.

If this doesn't work something is wrong with either the tv or the ps3 that no one can find out yet.

Or you'll need to get a different hdmi cable. Perhaps yours is faulty?

    Thanks Yoda,

I will give this a try.

I have had the PS3 & HDMI cable tested by my local Sony shop and both are working ok; I am worried that the problem may be with the HDMI input on my TV but I get the message that states there is a HDMI cable connection and do I want to use it, when I say yes the system goes blank for around 30 sec then resets to previous setting - normally I would expect the PS3 to give me the option to change from 1080P to 1080i but it does not get this far.

Sorry guess I should have been more clear.

This is the part where you have to select the hdmi input on your tv AFTER selecting yes to change to hdmi on the composite input. Once you are on the hdmi input on your tv you should now see the ps3 on that input and that is where you need to select yes on that screen. THen you should be using the hdmi selection.

  7. That HDTV may not support HDCP. No HDCP, no PS3+HDMI.

Or maybe the HDCP handshake is broken. Check with Sony to see if there a firmware update for the TV.

Did you set the PS3 to output 1080i over hdmi?

Check under Settings-Display Settings-Video Output Settings -HDMI. The default may be 480p or 1080p and possibly your tv doesn't support it.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

If the TV has a problem with the HDMI input there is a PS3 component adaptor available which supports all resolutions except 1080P.

    Hi All,

I am currently running the PS3 via a component adaptor and it is giving me 720 HDTV resolution - alas, even my friend who is an electronics/gadget anorak (I mean that in the kindest way as he is a genius) was baffled and it took 30 min before he had tweaked enough settings to allow visibility of the option to select resolution.

Thank you all for your informative responses but it looks as if I do need to get a new TV!
