I have this bluray reader/dvd/cd writer external drive hooked up, and i installed makemkv. it reads the bluray fine, but also wanted to know of any other alternate programs that will rip a bluray movie to my mac as an mkv file?

Last I heard (I fully admit to not keeping up to date though) you couldn't even play/read BluRay at all on a Mac. Interesting.

Sorry that I don't know of anything else that works.

    Mac Bluray Ripper Pro

    Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper for Mac

No idea how good they are, though. But they have a free trial.

Just curious why one would want to rip to mkv on a Mac. Why not H264/AAC in an MP4 container? It would seem to limit the compatibility and require more horsepower to play by going with an mkv. Maybe I'm wrong but every mkv that's come across my Mac presents challenges.

MakeMKV seems to be the best bet for ripping to an .mkv container. The only problem I have with that software is it periodically expires during the beta period.

Once the content is decrypted, either by MakeMKV or Mac Bluray Ripper Pro, Handbrake will convert it (if you need it converted). I've had successful playback of MKV content ripped from Bluray via VLC. A fairly new Mac mini will play it back without a problem. I primarily use MKV's in my Seagate FreeAgent Theater HD+, and MakeMKV is an excellent tool for this purpose.

Mac OS X doesnt natively support Bluray content. However, since Bluray is just a UDF formatted disc, it still mounts and displays the file contents in Finder. So, "support" is relative. Watching movies? No. Reading/burning* files? Yes (*with Toast and BD plug-in).

Well, MacBluRay Ripper would seem to be able to rip the content off the disc to your hard drive and, as AntnyMD says, Handbrake does a wonderful job of creating a reasonably sized H264(MP4) with AAC audio.

The key MakeMKV's developer issues for use with the beta periodically expires. The developer provides fresh keys, but I'm always caught trying to rip something I really want to watch on the day it expires! My copy just expired January 1, and I havent checked since then for a new key. Perhaps a fresh one is available now.
