    Hi all,

Long shot but you never know. Has anyone used a 7" Asus eeePC (about 3 yrs old and running Linux which I am not familiar with) as an external monitor for a Panasonic camcorder, specifically the HDC-SD700. I have connected both using the Pannies' USB cable but can't get a streaming picture on the PC's lcd screen. I tried to edit the built-in webcam properties but all to no avail.

If I can it will save me buying another monitor! (For use with a DoF adaptor.)

Thanks anyone in advance and hope all have a safe New Year!!!

    Phil

  2. The USB ports on camcorders are almost for playback only. Your likely chances of getting an external monitor function is thru the multi-AV port of this camcorder.

Try setting the camcorder output to be monitored on the multi-av port and try it on the AV input of your TV first. If it works, then you need to buy a USB video capture device, and add it to your netbook, and get your external monitor function.

AVCHD camcorders don't stream live over USB. All you could do is add an SD USB analog capture device. One that works with Linux.

Thanks so much guys. Especially for the quick responses. Now I won't be wasting any more time trying to do the impossible.

A new approach is called for. Ta.

  5. Try a portable DVD player, most have video/audio in and come in sizes from 3 to 10 inches, and there cheap.

That'll work fine for framing shots, but for focusing using a DoF adaptor, I think you'll need a decent monitor. Most portable DVD players don't have particularly good resolution.

Thanks for the suggestions. Whilst I love and have many 'gadgets' in the house, would you believe I have never treated the kids to a portable dvd player! So off to borrow one from a friend to see if something like this will fit the bill.
    Thanks chaps!
