  1. I have made some SVCD with bitrates up to 2500 Mbits.. But I get block noise in action scenes....

I have even tried bitrates up to 3500 but my Pioneer 545 just freezes then...

    I use
    Smartripper
    DVD2AVI
TMPGENC with "too lame" external audio encoder

    My latest rip i used
    audio 384
movie CB 2336 (have tried 2496 with audio 224 but still blocknoise)
    res 576x480 [PAL]

The sound is great, the picture is great until there is to much action..... THEN....... BLOCK NOISE...... HORRIBLE.....

I watched Lord of the rings on 4 CD SVCD with great quality 480x480 NTSC.....
Really would like to know how to get that quality.....

    Any pointers????

    morning Doohan99,

In short, it's all about lighting.
    LOTR is mostly:
    * dark'ly scenes,
    * CGI or something to that effect

These kinds of films can come out looking like the
origonal (a child can do this 1st try)

That's why it is soooooo easy to get great quality
out of it! It's notihng. Really! When it comes
out on DVD is will be NOTHING!! ...so easy to get
great quality of it. And when that time comes, it
will be soo boring that I'll have to shut my pc off,
from all that "ben there, done it" thing.

There is nothing so spectacular about LOTR, and it's
DIVx or SVCD samples, though I've seen so many
variation of them all. I'm bored with it already,
and I haven't even seen the movie (in it's intirety)

But, to get back to your post.

you didn't say what movie this was, that was giving
you trouble in action scenes. But, dvd scens are
usually better quality, even at action scenes, unless
it's the "lighting" or somthing, and there's just too
much complex movement, then, even DVDs with these types
of motion will not get any better at SVCD low bitrates.
But, I'm surprised that even at 3500, you still have
    blocks !

You are obvisouly a newbie to all this. It takes a
lot of time and effort to figure these blocks out. I've
ben doing it for a few years, and I can say that it
still gives me trouble on certain scenes to this day.

try reading the <<FAQ>> for some helpful
hints and things. There's a lot of img's on some of
    them. So, Read through them.

And, please don't thing that just because LOTR is such
great quality, that you should be able to get it with
ANY dvd, because that's so NOT gonna happen! It doesn't
    work that way.

So, read the FAQ, and visit doom9's website for detail
steps. They have quite a few on their site.
    Good luck!

  3. i must be a newbie too because i'm completely mystified at that explaination. this will not help with the blocks, but i noticed immediately your bitrates are a little too high for cbr to remain within svcd specs. am i right that you are getting massive dts/pts timestamp errors during multiplexing(demux & remux if you need to see)? it's not by much....40kbps or so in both cases. the bitrate page on my homepage will give you a closer(not perfect) estimate. best way to remove macroblocks is more bitrate; otherwise, you need to filter out image detail(smooth, soften) to free up more bits for the encoder to work with. video noise amounts to fine detail so it should be removed as well. tmpgenc has a soften macroblock setting somewhere you can try

  4. Hello Guys......

The block noise appear when there are explosions...... lots of light.....

Iīve tried the soft macro function but didnīt get any good result of it...

Anyway I tried som different settings in TMPGenc and the block nosie disappeared!!!!!!!!!!!

    Video Source :Non-Interlace
    Encode Mode :Non-Interlace

The strange thing is that i couldnīt tell the difference in the outcome in low,mid action scenes, between interlace and not-interlace settings.......
    I tried all variants.....

I thougt Interlace was the setting to use with a TV-set ......

I used the bitrate calc on this site.
It worked fine....... Havenīt done any multiplexing..... I just cut the movie to fit on 3 cds.....

The Planet of Apes 115 min 3 cds

    Movie 2496
    Audio 224

I tried a 2 Pass VBR up to 3500 but my dvd player couldnīt handle 3500 so I didnīt bother with that ..... the picture just keept freezing up......

IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF BLOCKNOISE A HIGH BITRATE???

    Thanx

    /Doohan99
