black border problems

i had a mov video file which i tried to convert to avi using any video converter but the finihsed product ends up with a black border on the bottom and on the right side of the video, i have tried to find other video converters which dont do this but to no avail is there a digital media converter or a video converter which when you convert to avi format it doesnt create the black borders on the finished video product
