  1. Hi I need to hook a pair of speakers up to a Denon amplifier. The outputs on the back of the amp are:

And on the back of the speakers is just standard speaker wire:

As there are just RCA's etc on the back of the amp what adapter do I need, or how's best to hook them up?

(Sorry for asking I just couldn't find an answer by googling 'rca to speaker wire')

You do not list the country of your location. If it's the US, I'd say Radio Shack is your friend. Speaker wire configurations like this are just about as common as dirt. (Did nothing come with the amp itself?) You could even buy speaker wire with RCA connections on both ends and just cut off one connector and strip the wire a bit. Trust me, this ain't no biggie.

  3. I'm in the UK. I asked in Maplins and all they said they do is RCA's or speaker wire. I know it's no biggie but I thought that there would be a single wire readily available that would solve this for me.

  4. I've never seen XLR connectors for speakers before.

It looks like you want to connect the two speaker wires to pins 2 and 3.

  5. Don't you mean pins 1 and 2? For positive and ground? I've found an XLR that had a 1/4" jack on the other end that I'm just stripping now..

  6. Technically, pin 1 is chassis ground, not signal ground (return). It's probably the same thing anyway.

A glance at the small print on the front panel of your unit reveals that this is a preamplifier/selector only. It is not intended to drive loudspeakers. You need to get a separate audio power amplifier.

Holy cats -- when I posted earlier, I was responding to your "Speaker wire to RCA" thread title. After the comments of others, I actually took a closer look at the photo (zooming in on the back panel). Boardbuilder is correct. This appears to be a pro AV preamp/source selector. Do you have a manual for this thing? There is an Output label beside those XLR ports at the bottom. I wouldn't be arbitrarily hooking those up to any speakers just yet. Even if you made a proper connection, you need to consider the impedence range, or you could blow out your speakers.

    Better do some homework.

Yes, after looking closely at the front, I agree too: it's a preamp, not a power amp. That would explain the use of XLR connectors.

I think it's more likely he'd blow out the pre-amp. Though it's probably protected against that.

Yes a pro level Pre-Amp with balanced 600 ohm XLR line level out. The advantage of the balanced 600ohm out is the cable runs to the power amp can be long (hundreds of feet). The manual should describe connections.

If you have an existing 5.1 receiver/power amp, the preamp does have optical and coax S/PDIF output so you can run one cable instead of 6+ but this unit is intended to feed all the cables for best performance.

    Why did you buy this?
    Amazon sells them for $999.

Here is a matching Denon power amp $429

If just a stereo pair, run them off "Tape Out" or "VCR Out" or "CDR/MD Out".

If 5.1 speakers, run them off S/PDIF.
